The Man Who Misplaced His Maybe

By Scott M. Bishop · From the Rocky Road Cafe

There once was a man with a maybe,
That he kept in a jar by the door;
Whenever life asked him for courage,
He said, “Just an ounce or two more.”

He polished the glass every morning,
He labeled it neatly: Someday,
Then dusted the shelf where he kept it
And hurried from living away.

The maybe grew fat in its bottle,
The man became careful and thin,
Till a child came by with a hammer
And kindly invited it in.

The maybe asked, “Is it morning?”
Then tumbled and tumbled out;
And before he could gather his reasons,
The man had already stepped out
